PORT ANGELES — Monroe Elementary School will be closed after 55 years of service to thousands of youngsters.
The Port Angeles School District board voted 4-1 Monday night to close Monroe effective June 30 to prevent a projected $300,000 budget deficit for the 2004-05 school year.
Cindy Kelly was the only board member who voted against shuttering the school at 102 Monroe Road.
“Nobody wants to close a school,” said board member Jessica Schreiber.
“Believe me, no one is enjoying this.”
Schreiber called the three-month process to close Monroe wrenching, but said she must be fiscally responsible and that means closing the school.
About 25 Monroe parents sat quietly in the Central Services Building’s small board room as the decision, which they have fought for the past several months, was made.
