PORT ANGELES: Mill cleanup workshop to be held tonight

A public workshop on the status of the Rayonier Inc. pulp mill site cleanup will be held tonight at the Port Angeles library.

The meeting will be hosted by the state Department of Ecology, which is managing the cleanup along with the company and the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe.

A work plan that will describe how, when and where additional data will be collected from the polluted 70-acre Ennis Street site is now being developed. The plan will be released for public review later this year.

The meeting will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Raymond Carver Room of the library, 2210 S Peabody St.

The paddles are among the thousands of gifts being created for participants in the 2025 Tribal Canoe Journey, hosted this year by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. The event begins with the landing of dozens of native canoes at the mouth of the Elwha River on July 31 and continues with five days of celebration on the Lower Elwha reservation west of Port Angeles. As many as 10,000 indigenous peoples are expected to take part. The public is invited to help with giftmaking sessions, scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Heritage Center.
