PORT ANGELES — Olympic Coast National Maine Sanctuary is 10 years old, and sanctuary officials are using this weekend to commemorate the event.
CoastFest, which the celebration is called, will feature dedication of the new Olympic Coast Discovery Center in The Landing mall on Railroad Avenue.
Sanctuary officials will host a series of free concerts on City Pier on Saturday, and offer various educational opportunities for people to learn more about the waters off the Olympic coastline.
The tallest aspect of CoastFest, the tall ship Lady Washington, is scheduled to arrive at City Pier tonight and be available Saturday for tours.
Lady Washington, featured in the Walt Disney movie, “The Pirates of the Caribbean,”‘ spent Thursday in Neah Bay en route from its Aberdeen home port to Port Angeles.
Peninsula tribes, including the Quinault, Hoh, Quileute, Makah, Lower Elwha Klallam, Jamestown S’Klallam and Port Gamble S’Klallam have been asked to land traditional cedar canoes at Hollywood Beach on Saturday morning as part of the festivities.
Members of Coast Guard Group/Air Station Port Angeles will conduct a helicopter rescue demonstration, and about 30 exhibitors will be located next to the Arthur D. Feiro Marine Life Center on City Pier to provide educational information.
All events are free and open to the public.
