Port Angeles man charged with second-degree child rape

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man has been charged with second-degree rape of a child.

Christopher Keith Wilson, 45, will be arraigned next Friday in Clallam County Superior Court. He was charged last Friday.

Port Angeles police allege that Wilson had a monthlong sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl.

Police Detective Shane Martin wrote in the arrest narrative that Wilson admitted to having sex with the child.

Wilson was arrested Thursday.

“There have been some concerns about the mental health of Mr. Wilson and some indications of wanting to hurt himself,” Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michele Devlin told Superior Court Judge Brian Coughenour in a Friday court hearing.

Devlin asked that Wilson be evaluated at Peninsula Behavioral Health prior to his release, with possible commitment to a mental health facility.

After consulting with his client, defense attorney Harry Gasnick of Clallam Public Defender did not object to Devlin’s request.

“Let’s make sure my client’s in a safe place,” Gasnick said.

Coughenour ordered Wilson to have a mental health evaluation at Peninsula Behavioral Health.

Coughenour said he found probable cause to support a charge of second-degree rape of a child, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a $50,000 fine.

Wilson, who has no felony history, is being held in the Clallam County jail on $10,000 bail.

Should he post bail, Wilson is ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim, among other conditions of release.
