PORT ANGELES — A 24-year-old man was arrested on investigation of third degree possession of stolen property when he went to the Port Angeles Police Department station to return stolen items and after a business owner said the man had returned a stolen bag to him.
Quinton D. Chastain of Port Angeles appeared in Clallam County Superior Court on Thursday after he was arrested Monday, both on investigation of possession of stolen property and possession of ecstasy.
“I made a stupid mistake,” a document filed by police quoted Chastain as telling an officer on Monday.
“I got really drunk on Saturday night — I’m trying to fix it. I just made a stupid mistake.
“And now,” said the man who police said originally waived his rights, “I think I need to talk to a lawyer.”
Earlier Monday, “there was forced entry into Tom Bihn Inc., and an external hard drive, a backpack, some clothing and a $600 camera was stolen,” said Sgt. Tyler Peninger.
Tom Bihn Inc., 127 E. First St., Port Angeles sells laptop bags and accessories as well as other types of bags, such as reusable grocery bags, travel bags and backpacks.
The court document said that Bihn, the owner of the business, had told police that he saw Chastain walking near his business with one of his bags.
“Bihn confronted Chastain about where he acquired the bag, and Chastain gave him two different stories before giving the bag back to him,” the probable cause statement said.
Chastain brought police an external hard drive and backpack that had been stolen from the business.
He told police the items were stolen but “did not wish to disclose where he acquired the times,” the court document said.
It was unclear whether the camera had been recovered, Peninger said.
Chastain was released on his personal recognizance on Tuesday, according to court documents.
No arraignment date was noted in court documents Thursday.
