Port Angeles: Man accused of rape found dead in jail cell

PORT ANGELES — A 19-year-old man apparently strangled himself Tuesday evening while a prisoner in the Clallam County jail.

Miles Eli Schulmeister of West 10th Street was pronounced dead shortly after 7 p.m. when attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Schulmeister’s apparent suicide is the second by an inmate at the jail since March.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Department officials said there were no indications Schulmeister might be suicidal.

“Our corrections officers are always looking for safety issues and red flags,” Clallam County Sheriff’s Department Chief Criminal Deputy Fred DeFrang said Wednesday. “There were no indications here.”
