PORT ANGELES — Departing Chamber of Commerce President Ray Gruver honored horticulturist Andrew May with the 2003 President’s Award on Monday.
But May, who demonstrates gardening classes, blankets buildings in Christmas lights, leads bus tours to garden shows and writes a weekly column for Peninsula Daily News, was stranded in Ocean Shores by bad weather.
Nonetheless, Gruver gave May accolades for his volunteer work with the chamber, Port Angeles Business Association, Port Angeles Rotary Club and other organizations.
Gruver likened May, a single-share owner of the publicly owned Green Bay Packers in his native Wisconsin town, to a football coach.
“I’m inspired by his big play,” Gruver told an audience of about 100 attending the chamber’s weekly luncheon at the Port Angeles CrabHouse Restaurant.
