PORT ANGELES — Ferry travelers are being watched.
High-speed computer facial scanners connected to about 35 powerful new surveillance cameras installed at Port Angeles’ two international ferry docks are capable of identifying a wanted fugitive, said Jack Harmon, president of the Victoria Express passenger ferry.
The U.S. Customs Service recently installed the cameras to heighten security, Harmon told the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce on Monday.
The same kind of high-tech cameras and computers are used by federal officials to scan the faces of people at other U.S.-Canada border crossings, and they’re now also pointed at lines of visitors at the White House, Statue of Liberty and other potential terrorist targets nationwide.
