Port Angeles High School training corps prevails in state competition

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets won the overall state championship title during competition at Mount Tahoma High School.

The Northwest Drill and Rifle Conference Championship was last weekend.

“Our NJROTC cadets competed against 850 cadets from 30 high schools across the states of Washington and Oregon,” said Capt. Jonathan Picker, senior naval science instructor.

“Jeff and I are very proud of our cadets’ efforts, especially considering the size of our school/company,” Picker added, referring to Master Chief Jeffery Perry, who also serves as a naval science instructor at the high school.

Along with winning the overall title, the cadets took top honors in team events.

The Armed Drill Team won first place, Color Guard Team 1 won second, Color Guard Team 2 won third and the Physical Strength Team tied for second place.

Individual honors went to Alex Parrill, Armed Drill Team Command, who won second place; Audra Perrizo, who won the Iron Woman, which is awarded to the top female athlete; Erin Edwards, named runner-up in the Iron Woman contest; and Erin Rice, who took fifth place in Unarmed Drill-down.
