Port Angeles: Gateway gets new look – — – at $11.54 million

PORT ANGELES — A sleek redesign of Gateway International Transportation Center was rolled out Monday, with expanded underground parking and a proposed price tag of $11.54 million, which is more than double the original cost for the project.

“You can’t just simply take the parking out of the center of town and run it up to Safeway,” Tim Smith, city of Port Angeles economic development director, as he explained the new plans to the Clallam Transit board.

Smith said the city’s parking advisory committee, chaired by City Councilwoman Karen Rogers, came up with a plan that satisfies the panel’s goal of “no net loss” of parking downtown when the Gateway project is constructed.

The proposal also puts to rest issues of lost public parking to ferry system users. Both Jack Harmon, Victoria Express owner, and Wayne Barrett, manager of the Coho ferry operation, are parking committee members and have participated in the new plans.
