Port Angeles: Ferry passengers could face new federal fee

PORT ANGELES — Jack Harmon, president of the Victoria Express, told local business leaders Monday how a new ferry passenger charge has been proposed by a federal agency.

That the U.S. Customs Service wants to tack a $4 fee onto his fares for passage to and from Victoria comes as no surprise.

In fact, he said, he expected it.

In the wake of the Immigration and Naturalization Service’s announcement earlier this year that it wants to collect $3 from every man, woman and child passenger on international ferry crossings, Harmon said he expected other federal agencies to want to charge, too, to help defray the costs of heightened security along the U.S.-Canada border.

Harmon and Wayne Barrett, manager of Black Ball Transit’s MV Coho, addressed the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce noon luncheon, giving the group an update on the state of the local ferry industry.
