PORT ANGELES — Volunteers with hammers, tool belts and enthusiasm began the five-day process of building a children’s “Dream Playground” on Wednesday.
Organizers said 373 people set posts, prepared preliminary framing and completed pre-fabrication work for the tops of turrets for the 12,000-square-foot playground at Erickson Park during the first official day of community construction.
Dream Playground is expected to be completed by 6 p.m. Sunday.
An ice-cream social and a play time at the playground will mark the completion.
After a few hours the playground will be closed for two days for final inspections.
Today, volunteers will continue framing and begin digging holes for fences and handrails.
The playground will be built like an old-fashioned barn raising and will involve more than 1,100 community volunteers before it’s over.
