Port Angeles considers Elwha sewer hook-up

The Port Angeles City Council could decide at its March 4 meeting how much it will charge the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe to hook up to the city’s sewer system.

The city’s Utility Advisory Committee will consider a recommendation to the council at a special meeting set for 3 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Public Works Conference Room at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

The tribe wants to form a sewer district so it can connect a three-mile-long line to the city’s sewer system at 18th Street and Milwaukee Drive.

The tribe needs to find an alternative to septic systems before the Elwha River dams are removed in 2006 and 2007, which will raise groundwater levels on the reservation.
