The U.S. Coast Guard has notified the city of Port Angeles of its intent to cancel its $30,000 lease at City Pier for mooring the 210-foot Coast Guard cutter Active, said City Manager Mike Quinn.
The lease’s cancellation, effective the end of March, came as a result of the Active being moved to moorage at the Coast Guard Group’s pier on Ediz Hook, said Quinn.
The Active’s move across Port Angeles Harbor followed federal homeland security efforts after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City. The Active falls under the Coast Guard’s Pacific Area Command out of Alameda, Calif., a command separate from Coast Guard Group Port Angeles.
“So what happens now is that essentially frees up space at City Pier,” said Quinn.
City leaders are considering their options, including moorage for cruise ships or work vessels, repairs to the pier and use of the pier space for other special events and activities, he said. City Pier is managed by the city’s Parks Department.
