PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles is getting a new skateboard park on Labor Day weekend.
Now come the classes to complement it.
A pilot youth skateboard program to teach safety, etiquette and technique will start Oct 1.
“I’d like to see something for the kids, 6 to 10 years old, a structured program so they actually will use the new skateboard park,” Erik Dukes said at the Thursday Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission.
Dukes said the class will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturdays before the park opens.
The instructor will have no more than six students, he said.
People skills will be more important in choosing an instructor than skateboarding skills, Dukes said.
Applicants must have good communication skills and patience; be willing to work with youths 6 to 10 years of age; be at least 18 years old; be available Saturday mornings; possess transportation; and pass a state background check.
