PORT ANGELES — City Hall is posing a solution that might keep the road to Hurricane Ridge open at least a few days next month.
City Manager Mike Quinn has offered to share the city road crew’s resources with Olympic National Park during April while the park focuses on repairing winter damage to its roads elsewhere.
The park last week announced that it will close Hurricane Ridge Road — the only vehicle route to the park’s most popular, mile-high destination — from the end of March until May 1, citing a strained budget and the need to shift its eight-person road crew to other sites for repair work.
Last April, the Ridge attracted nearly 8,000 visitors.
On Thursday, city Public Works Director Glenn Cutler will meet with park maintenance personnel to discuss the park’s needs and how to coordinate resources.
“The motivation is that we consider (Hurricane Ridge) a very valuable asset to the community and tourism, for people to come up and visit the park,” Cutler said Tuesday.
“It’s one of the destination points, and we certainly don’t want people to be disappointed when they come to the area.”
