PORT ANGELES — A California company says it wants to lease 10 acres on the Port Angeles waterfront to employ up to 65 people to build a 300-foot container ship that would sail between California and Hawaii.
But the announcement by Santa Maria Shipping LLC — made at Monday’s Port commission meeting — and articles posted at the company’s Web site quickly brought up many questions.
The company likes the Port Angeles area, the work force is available and the company has partners and money, Stas Margaronis, president of Santa Maria, told the three Port commissioners.
But the land Santa Maria wants is owned by the Daishowa America paper mill.
And the Port is reportedly currently in negotiations to buy it.
The Port commissioners told Margaronis that he needed to talk directly with Daishowa officials about the 10 acres, which is adjacent to the Boat Haven.
