PORT ANGELES — A Monroe Elementary School student has turned his hobby of tying fishing flies into a business.
Ryan Olson, 12, said he would rather fly-fish than play video games.
After learning how to tie flies six years ago, Ryan decided to continue to learn how to make a variety of flies.
“It’s an awesome hobby,” Ryan said. “It gives me something to do, and I love to fish with them.”
Ryan said he sells the flies at his grandparents’ resort in Sekiu. The price depends on how large they are.
Although he does not have a name for his business, he said he has thought about calling it Ry’s Flies.
Ryan said his friend, Ben Mittelstaedt, owner of Quality Fly Fishing, 2720 E. Highway 101, helped teach him the process of tying a fly.
“Ben has been really great,” Ryan said. “He has the best materials and has helped me learn how to make great flies.”
