PORT ANGELES — Music, classic cars, local artists displaying work, warm weather and sand were all part of the weekend’s popular Arts in Action festival enjoyed by an estimated 20,000 people.
As late as Sunday afternoon in the three-day event, thousands of people milled about booths, gawked at the 210-ton, 29-foot, 3½-inch-tall sand sculpture, which unofficially broke the world record for tallest sand creation, and listened to music while a cool summer breeze blew through downtown.
Based on the attendance estimate — believed to be higher than last year — Arts in Action was considered a success by its organizers.
“We are very pleased,” said Michael “Doc” Reiss, a Nor’wester Rotary member on the Arts in Action committee.
Reiss said visitation to the event was up from last year.
“I think this is great,” said Marilyn Kraus of Port Angeles. “I come every year; the music and the crafts are a draw for a lot of people.”
She said taking a peek at the construction of the sand structure was a must.
“I am amazed that it was able to stand up,” Kraus said, smiling.
