PORT ANGELES — Pilots at this year’s Airport Day hope a taste of flying will send more young people into the “wild blue yonder.”
The fourth annual event, scheduled for Saturday at William R. Fairchild International Airport, is aimed at encouraging youths to consider careers in aviation.
Children ages 7 to 17 will get to feel the wind through their hair and their stomachs do flips as they take free flights with the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles program.
“It is the hope of EAA that this will be seeding the future for commercial and non-commercial airline pilots,” said Alan Barnard, an Airport Day organizer.
Youths who grace the skies with local pilots this weekend will receive an official Young Eagles certificate and have their names added to more than 700,000 others on the World’s Largest Logbook.
Interested youths must bring a parent or guardian to sign a consent form.
Rite Bros. Aviation will offer adult scenic rides for a fee.
