SEQUIM — Pet Town has been preparing for Petco’s arrival. But Randy Maag, owner of Sequim’s only full-line pet shop, was still glad to hear that the 12,000-square-foot store’s opening date has been delayed.
When the national pet-supply chain announced last year that it would build in the Sequim Village Marketplace, the projected opening was in April.
That’s been moved to July 16, according to Don Cowan, spokesman for the San Diego company. He didn’t give a reason.
Petco will be the next addition to the shopping center at West Washington Street and River Road, where Home Depot dominates the horizon.
The city installed a traffic signal at River Road and U.S. Highway 101 this week in anticipation of the shoppers who will stream into the Marketplace.
It will, after all, have a Costco come summer.
Weather and real-estate negotiations slowed construction, said Costco Wholesale chief executive Jim Sinegal.
“We’re saying sometime around September. If we got lucky, it would be August,” when the warehouse opens, Sinegal said.
The new Costco will employ 60 more people than the current warehouse at Hooker Road and U.S. Highway 101, he added. About 115 people work at that location now.
