PORT ANGELES — Sequim road crews are prepared for the possibility of lowland snow, city officials announced this week.
Public works crews will be on call throughout the weekend to clear city streets if necessary, Sequim Streets Manager Mike Brandt said Wednesday.
The National Weather Service on Thursday forecast a chance of snow in the North Olympic Peninsula lowlands tonight and Saturday, followed by a period of cool and dry weather.
It would be the first lowland snow of the season.
When it snows, road crews concentrate on clearing the main arterials first.
In Sequim, the top priorities are Washington Street, Sequim Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Third Avenue, overpasses and school routes, Brandt said.
Public works officials from other Peninsula jurisdictions say they, too, are ready for winter.
“At this time of the year, we’re always on alert,” Clallam County Engineer Ross Tyler said Wednesday.
“I’ll watch it over the weekend. I don’t think it will amount to anything. Once we get into the stuff that comes out of the Fraser River, we’d better all be geared up for convergence zone issues.”
Jefferson County Public Works Director/Engineer Monte Reinders said road crews were already scheduled to work this weekend.
“I’d be more concerned about ice on the road than any accumulation of snow,” Reinders added.
Port Angeles Engineer Mike Puntenney said the city has made no special preparations for this weekend, as crews are already prepared to plow the roads.
“We run on a continual state of readiness,” Puntenney said.
“We’re all ready to go.”
