Despite aircraft being grounded nationwide, a Sequim pilot was granted a special clearance Wednesday to transport blood donated during a Clallam Bay drive for victims of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast to Seattle.
Jeff Well, owner of Port Angeles-based Rite Bros. Aviation, got the go-ahead from the Federal Aviation Administration just after 5:30 p.m. to pick up an unusually large amount of blood from the Sekiu Airport and deliver it to Boeing Field, he said.
The blood was collected Wednesday during a blood drive at Clallam Bay Corrections Center, sponsored by Puget Sound Blood Center, he said.
It was packaged in picnic-sized coolers, Well said.
The pilot then transported it to the Seattle headquarters of the Puget Sound Blood Center for testing and processing.
