PORT ANGELES — The National Park Service’s demonstration fee program has been a success because people can see the direct benefits of paying those fees, new National Park Service Director Fran Mainella said Thursday.
Mainella, the service’s first-ever woman director, expressed her views on the fee program during an afternoon news briefing at Olympic National Park headquarters.
“People don’t mind paying the fee if it is fair and they can see a benefit,” Mainella said.
The demonstration fee program charges people to use specific trails or other areas of a national park. This fee is separate from entrance fees.
The fees benefit each park directly, helping fund such items as interpretive videos as well as regular maintenance, Mainella said.
