Peninsula Home Fund warms family of 6 with clothing help for growing boy

EDITOR’S NOTE: For 27 years, Peninsula Daily News readers in Jefferson and Clallam counties have supported the “hand up, not a handout” Peninsula Home Fund.

Today we feature another in a series of articles on how the fund operates and who benefits from our readers’ generosity.

Thursday was the last day to donate and get a receipt for a tax deduction in 2015, but you can still make a tax-deductible donation for 2016.

PORT TOWNSEND — Ray and Lora Robinson do their best to keep their four growing children well clothed, but it’s not easy, especially in the fall and winter months when they need jackets, boots and extra clothing to keep them warm and dry.

Although both the Robinsons work full time — she’s a medical technician at a local assisted living and retirement home and he harvests shellfish off the Hood Canal — it’s a constant struggle to make ends meet for their family of six, with children Daymiyon, 12; Hunter, 10; Makayla, 8; and Jackson, 5.

After one son recently went through a growth spurt and had “very little clothing,” Lora Robinson said, “we just didn’t have the money, and I knew I’d have to ask for help.”

One of her son’s teachers suggested she go to the Olympic Community Action Programs office in Port Townsend for help.

The nonprofit agency known as OlyCAP is the No. 1 emergency-care agency on the North Olympic Peninsula. It manages the Peninsula Daily News’ Peninsula Home Fund, screens the applicants and distributes the money.

Lora said she was hesitant to approach OlyCAP for fear someone might look down on her for not being able to provide for her own children.

“That’s when I said to myself, ‘You need the help, so go in and ask,’ ” she said.

Once inside, “they immediately put me at ease.”

Clothing voucher

She was assigned a case manager, who, after assessing her situation, handed her a $50 clothing voucher from the Peninsula Home Fund.

“I’m very grateful the Home Fund is there to help us out,” she said.

“There are so many families like us, with two parents who work full time and who still struggle to get by, so I think it’s a wonderful program.”

She said it can be difficult at times to balance being a “full-time worker and a full-time mom who gives each kid their special mom time, but I’ve found a way to make it work.”

The Robinsons “do love our family time together,” she said, although she added jokingly, “It’s not a pleasant smell when my husband first comes home from work.”

OlyCAP also helped the family with Christmas gifts, “which is a huge help,” she said.

One of the best gifts she received at OlyCAP wasn’t financial, Lora said.

It was compassion.

Stopping by the office to ask a question, she said, “I’m feeling so stressed out over everything.”

Her case manager pulled her aside and asked how she was doing, and “I just broke down and started crying. She just stood there and listened until finally I cried myself out and was able to express my feelings of thankfulness and gratitude for the help.

“It felt so good to finally talk to someone outside my world who doesn’t know what’s going on in my life.”

Peninsula’s safety net

Every year, the Peninsula Daily News’ “hand up, not a handout” Peninsula Home Fund provides a safety net for local residents when there is nowhere else to turn.

To continue its success, the Home Fund depends on its compassionate donors delivering hope to thousands of individuals and families, many with young children, who suddenly face an emergency situation and can’t find help elsewhere.

From Port Townsend to Forks, from Quilcene and Brinnon to Sequim and LaPush, the Home Fund helps children, teens, families and the elderly to get through an emergency situation.

Money from the Home Fund is used for hot meals for seniors in Jefferson and Clallam counties; warm winter coats for kids; keeping the heat on, home repairs, clothing, furniture, food, rent and other essentials for a low-income family; needed prescription drugs; dental work; safe, drug-free temporary housing; eyeglasses — the list goes on and on.

“I think the Home Fund is fantastic,” said Ray Robinson.

“Everybody can always use a little help once in a while, so it’s appreciated.

“I think we always have to pay it forward, too,” he added.

Ray found a homeless family with children living in the woods nearby who didn’t have “much of anything with them, so I gave them a couple sleeping bags and some camping gear.”

He mentioned OlyCAP might be able to help them and told them camping was free at the fairgrounds where they’d have access to bathrooms and showers.

The Home Fund is not a welfare program.

The average amount of help is usually below $100; this year has been $70 per person.

No money is deducted by the Peninsula Daily News for administration fees or any other overhead.

Every penny goes to OlyCAP — the No. 1 emergency-care agency on the North Olympic Peninsula — to administer the fund, and every penny contributed goes to support our neighbors in need in Jefferson and Clallam counties.
