DUNGENESS — Officials are trying to determine if the death of a harbor porpoise found washed ashore on Dungeness Spit is related to the use of sonar by the U.S. Navy.
The porpoise carcass is one of several found through the Strait of Juan de Fuca region in recent days.
Carcasses have also been found at Fort Casey State Park and West Beach, both on Whidbey Island, and Vancouver Island locations.
Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge officials could not be reached Wednesday for comment on the carcass found Sunday on Dungeness Spit.
Orca Network spokesman Howard Garrett confirmed Wednesday that a necropsy will be performed on the Dungeness Spit carcass.
“The carcass has been retrieved and will be examined for head trauma,”‘ he said.
