Peninsula Daily News receives 11 awards in statewide contest

The Peninsula Daily News received 11 awards from the Washington Press Association in Seattle on Saturday for articles and page design in 2009.

The PDN competed in the WPA’s annual award contest against other daily newspapers in the state.

Reporter Tom Callis won first place in the general news category for “Anniversary of Officer’s Death Today.”

Senior Staff Writer Paul Gottlieb took six awards:

• First place in the social issues/minority affairs category for “Poor Families Forced to Choose Cremation.”

• First place in investigative reporting for a two -part series, “Suicide Attempts: One Suicide Brings Up Questions About Safety Fencing on New Port Angeles Bridges.”

• Second place in the agricultural/environment category for a two-part series, “Big Bill for Small Ponds: Owners Blindsided by Dam Repair Bills.”

• Second place in general news for “Dogs Scoured Beaches for Native Remains.”

• Third place in general news for a two-part series, “A Decade Ago: Terrorist Captured.”

• Co-winner with reporter Rolf Boone of The Daily Olympian of the 2009 runner-up sweepstakes award, for which both received a plaque and $50.

PDN Special Sections Editor Trisha McMahon won four awards.

They were:

• First place for cover page layout, Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival special section.

• Second place for cover page layout, Discover special section.

• Honorable mention for page layout, Spring Fling to the Coast special section.

• Honorable mention for illustration, Hood Canal Bridge special section.
