PORT RENFREW, British Columbia — Boaters making their way through the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Saturday got a surprise warning from the U.S. Coast Guard as a result of routine firing drills aboard the cutter Cuttyhunk.
The U.S. Coast Guard put out alerts every fifteen minutes during live munitions tests aboard the 110-foot, Port Angeles-based cutter.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Robin Olsen said the live firing drill lasted from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The tests were not connected to the “heightened security posture” of the Coast Guard ordered in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, Olsen said.
“It was scheduled, and something we have to do every couple of months,” Olsen said.
