Recent rains and the forecast for more during the next few weeks will douse the ban on open fires and smoking on public lands on the North Olympic Peninsula today at 8 a.m.
The ban has been in effect since July 25 in all of Western Washington, including Olympic National Park, Olympic National Forest and state Department of Natural Resources lands on the Peninsula.
“Conditions on the Olympic Peninsula are wet enough now and the danger of human-caused fires is reduced, so we can now lift the ban on open fires,”‘ said Dale Hom, Olympic National Forest supervisor.
Burn bans remain in effect in Clallam and Jefferson counties outside of federal and DNR areas.
