Almost a quarter of women surveyed randomly in Washington have been victims of forcible rape in their lifetimes, a statistic that one advocate says is probably accurate for rural areas like Jefferson and Clallam counties.
A recent study conducted through the state Office of Crime Victims Advocacy found that of 1,325 women surveyed, 23 percent had been forcibly raped, and most of the assaults occurred before the women were 18.
“I think it absolutely applies,” said Peggy Thompson, executive director of the Domestic Violence/Substance Abuse Program of Jefferson County.
“They’re pretty much the figures we’ve been seeing for a while,” she said.
