SEQUIM — World War II veteran Winford “Wink”‘ Mays will host two events Wednesday to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Mays, who was aboard the battleship USS Nevada during the attack, will host a flag-raising ceremony at Port Williams and a program for Sequim High School students.
Mays said the short flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. at Marlyn Nelson Park near Port Williams will feature a bugler.
An hour later, Mays will lead a presentation on Pearl Harbor for students at Sequim High School.
Mays will be joined by Al Willis, the bugler who will be playing at the flag-raising ceremony, and a youth minister.
Katelyn McDougal will sing the national anthem.
The presentation will be in the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
About 265 students are expected to attend the 20-minute presentation, he said.
Mays said he is trying to get youth to study the events of Dec. 7, 1941.
“If you can get their attention, it’s real important,” he said.
Mays also has started a $1,000 scholarship, which is awarded to a student who writes an essay about the events of Pearl Harbor.
