PABA backs Port’s Oak Street sale

PORT ANGELES — After hearing reassurances from city officials about European developer Harry Dorssers’ proposed Oak Street project, the Port Angeles Business Association endorsed the Port of Port Angeles selling the waterfront property.

“We have an experienced developer, so patience please as the progress goes forward,” Mayor Karen Rogers said to the business group at its regular Tuesday meeting at Joshua’s Restaurant and Lounge.

The Port’s board of commissioners is scheduled to vote Monday to declare as surplus its 1.9-acre property at the northwest corner of Front and Oak streets.

The property could then be sold to Dorssers for $800,000 for a proposed project that could include condominium-hotels, an aquatic center and retail space.

Parking would be located underground and off-site.

The Port’s board of commissioners meets at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Port’s headquarters, 338 W. First St., Port Angeles.

No pool position taken

City Manager Mark Madsen said “first and foremost” that Port Angeles hasn’t taken a position on Dorssers’ project in regards to where to build a new city swimming pool.

The city’s swimming pool committee is operating parallel to the Oak Street development, Madsen said.

The city is studying construction of a new swimming pool to replace 45-year-old William Shore Memorial Pool at 225 E. Fifth St.

The city has proposed a swimming pool with aquatic center features on Peabody Street next to City Hall in what is now the parking lot between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Estimated cost is between $9.6 million and $11 million.

Clallam County Family YMCA has proposed building a community swimming pool as part of a recreation complex at its headquarters at 302 S. Francis St.

No estimated cost has been determined.

A pool siting recommendation is scheduled for the council’s April 13 meeting, Madsen said.
