Port Townsend open house to showcase maritime classes for Peninsula high school students

PORT TOWNSEND — An open house on the offerings provided by the maritime operations program of the Port Townsend Maritime Academy is set from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

The open house will be upstairs in the Red Building at the Northwest Maritime Center at 431 Water St.

It will provide details for the free half-day public school program for juniors and seniors from Port Townsend, Chimacum, Quilcene, Port Angeles, Sequim, Coupeville and North Kitsap, said Anika Colvin, communications director for the maritime center, in a press release.

The 2019-20 alternative learning experience, which would be mornings Monday through Friday, would allow students to earn up to three credits in Career & Technical Education, English language arts, and physical education while boating, training and studying the maritime industry.

Units would include Basic Safety Training, Vessel Handling, Wilderness Advanced First Aid, Maritime Law Enforcement, Navigation, Emergency Response, Incident Analysis, Vessel Maintenance, Keelboat Instructor Certification, Rigging, Physical Training and Leadership.

Classes would be at the Northwest Maritime Center, job sites and in Port Townsend Bay.
