OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — It’s probably out. Finally.
Heavy rains and light snow over the past few weeks have apparently snuffed out the 795-acre forest fire on Griff Peak.
While no smoke has been seen for days, “it is possible that we may have some large logs still smoldering on the ground, under the tree canopy where rain has not reached,” said Park Spokeswoman Barb Maynes.
“That is typical of forest fires.”
Park officials spent about $408,000 to suppress the fire, located in extremely steep, remote and rugged terrain about two miles northwest of Hurricane Ridge.
The fire was started by lightning Sept. 6. Cool and wet weather kept the fire to just a few acres.
Then a two-week period of sunny, dry weather in late September and early October fanned the flames, sending them across hundreds of acres in just a matter of days.
