OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Volunteer divers plan to swim 192 feet into the depths of Lake Crescent today to retrieve items from a car that plunged into the lake more than 43 years ago.
The dive will be made at milepost 223, near Ambulance Point on U.S. Highway 101, where the 1950 two-door, black Dodge sedan entered the chilly water on Jan. 24, 1960.
Three of four passengers — all of whom escaped the submerged car with only minor injuries — will be waiting onshore today as divers attempt to retrieve a suitcase, a purse, the car’s license plate and any other personal objects they can reach.
“What we will be bringing up is a personal time capsule,” said Bill Walker, a volunteer diver from Seattle, who is leading the effort.
