The North Olympic Peninsula’s population is close to 100,000 today, based on newly released U.S. Census figures showing the region just shy of that mark last July 1.
The Census Bureau on Thursday released mid-2007 population estimates for Clallam and Jefferson counties — as it did for all counties in the United States.
Clallam County topped 70,000 population for the first time last year with a July 1 estimate of 70,474.
Jefferson’s estimate was 29,199, putting the North Olympic Peninsula’s total nose count at 99,673.
Those figures compare with July 1, 2006, census estimates of 69,716 in Clallam County and 29,029 in Jefferson County — a North Olympic Peninsula population total of 98,745.
The growth difference between 2006 and 2007: 928.
In the last official decennial census in 2000, Clallam had a population of 64,288, while Jefferson had 26,418.
Using the mid-2007 estimates, Clallam has added 6,186 people so far this decade, while Jefferson has added 2,781.
