NEWS BRIEFS: Two Salish Sea talks set for Thursdays in Port Hadlock . . . and other items

PORT HADLOCK — A talk on “Marine Mammals of the Salish Sea” will be held by biologist David Rugh at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 12 and Nov. 19.

Marine mammals in Washington waters (the Salish Sea) include whales (gray whales, humpbacks, minke and orcas), small cetaceans (harbor porpoise, Dall’s porpoise and Pacific white-sided dolphins), pinnipeds (California sea lions, Steller sea lions, harbor seals and northern elephant seals) and sea otters.

In the first session of the talk, to be held Nov. 12, these creatures’ basic biology, distribution and population sizes, based on the most recent reports from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA), will be divulged.

In the session Nov. 19, Rugh will share some personal experiences, as well as tales from friends and colleagues.

Rugh is a career wildlife biologist with a master’s degree in zoology.

For more than 34 years, his research through NOAA’s National Marine Mammal Lab focused on the whales of Alaska but included a variety of marine mammals in U.S. waters with more than 100 research trips from California to Alaska and northwest Canada.

All are welcome to either or both sessions.

For more information, phone Rugh at 360-765-3807 or email dave.rugh48@gmail.com.

Mock election

PORT HADLOCK — Every year, the Caldecott Medal is awarded by the American Library Association (ALA) to the most distinguished picture book for children.

Jefferson County Library Youth Services Librarian Martha Ashenfelter and local author and illustrator Faith Pray have selected 32 “hot” picture book titles of 2015 from a list of 50 they’ve identified as contenders for this prestigious award.

On Thursdays from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., the Jefferson County Library is inviting kids ages 6 to 11 to examine this selection of Caldecott contenders and vote in a Jefferson County Library Mock Caldecott competition, where participants can learn, evaluate, vote for and celebrate outstanding books of 2015.

Teens who are interested in participating are also welcome.

All 32 books will be displayed at the library in November along with secret ballot envelopes.

The library is located at 620 Cedar Ave.
