NEWS BRIEFS — State Patrol probes hit-run of fire hydrant in Port Townsend . . . and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — The State Patrol is investigating a hit-and-run of a fire hydrant.

A midsized gray sedan traveling south on state Highway 19 left the roadway and struck a fire hydrant Monday night before continuing south on the highway, the State Patrol said.

The collision was about 5 miles south of Port Townsend and mangled the right-rear-quarter panel of the car.

It is not known who was driving.

Holiday open house slated this Thursday

PORT HADLOCK — The staff and board of trustees of the Jefferson County Library will host the annual holiday open house at the library, 620 Cedar Ave., from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

All are welcome to come celebrate the season with a cookie and a cup of hot cider.

Admission is free.

Paula Lalish will perform on her harp, and various holiday craft projects will be offered.

Participants can decorate votive candles, create monster bookmarks and engage in seasonal crafts. All materials will be provided.

Refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Jefferson County Library and the Food Co-op.

Cartography lesson

FORKS — The North Olympic Library System has canceled the beginners’ cartography program at the Forks Library, originally scheduled to take place today.

The library planed to reschedule “Map It! at the Forks Library” later next year.

Holiday craft sale

FORKS — The Forks Open Aire Market will hold a holiday craft sale at JT’s Sweet Stuffs, 80 N. Forks Ave. (in the conference room in the back), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The sale features handcrafted items.

The market is hosting the Forks Abuse Giving Tree for the day, as well as providing a box for nonperishable food for the Forks Food Bank.

The table-space rental fee of $5 will be donated for the Giving Tree.

PIC plan meeting

SEQUIM — The public is invited to a meeting to learn more about the newly drafted Pollution Identification and Correction (PIC) Plan for the Sequim-Dungeness Clean Water District.

The meeting will take place at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The meeting will include a brief presentation of the draft PIC plan being officially released for public review.

“The draft PIC Plan helps coordinate work, develop partnerships and creates efficiencies in working to improve water quality in our rivers, streams and marine waters,” said Andy Brastad, director of Clallam County Health and Human Services Environmental Health Section.

Hard copies of the plan will be available at the Sequim and Port Angeles libraries, Environmental Health (Room 130) in the Clallam County Courthouse, as well as at the Conservation District’s office, 228 W. First St. (Armory Square Building) in Port Angeles.

Electronic copies of the plan are available at www.clallamcd.org and can be emailed upon request.

Comments on the plan will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 22.

The meeting will include information on an upcoming PIC pilot project that will test the newly drafted PIC plan.

Tech ‘petting zoo’

In partnership with the Washington State Library, the Port Townsend and Jefferson County libraries are providing a hands-on, pre-holiday “Technology Petting Zoo and Gadget Menagerie.”

The Port Townsend Library will offer a “petting zoo” of technology from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the Library Learning Center, 1256 Lawrence St.

The Jefferson County Library will offer a gadget “menagerie” from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the library, 620 Cedar Ave. in Port Hadlock.

These sessions will allow people to try an array of eReaders, tablets and other devices, including the Microsoft Surface, iPad/iPad Mini, Chromebook, Kindle/Kindle Fire, Nook Simple, Nook Touch, Nook HD+, Galaxy Note Tab, Kobo Arc 7, Google Nexus 7 and Transformer Pad.

Victorian salon

PORT TOWNSEND — A Victorian Yuletide Salon will be held at the Jefferson Museum of Art and History, 540 Water St., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Costumed performers will sing, play and recite holiday favorites.

Children can have a photo taken with Father Christmas.

PORT TOWNSEND — A holiday “open ship” aboard the schooner Adventuress will be held at the Point Hudson Marina, 103 Hudson St., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

During Port Townsend Main Street’s Victorian Yuletide Festival, participants sip and snack on treats, meet the winter crew, explore the ship and more.
