NEWS BRIEFS: Squadron to offer boating safety course in Port Hadlock starting Feb. 16 … and other items

PORT HADLOCK — The Port Wilson Sail & Power Squadron will offer a nine-hour boating, seamanship and safety course spread over three nights at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, 42 Water St.

The class will be held Feb. 16, Feb. 23 and March 1 — all Thursdays — from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The cost is $45 for a textbook, and a discount of $19 is offered for an additional household member who shares the book.

This is an approved qualifying course for a Washington State Boater’s Education Card, which is mandatory for boaters born after Jan. 1, 1955, who operate a 15-horsepower engine or more on a power or sail vessel.

The class will focus on safety issues for sail- and power boats, navigational rules, seamanship and an introduction to piloting.

Certificates of completion will be issued when students pass a written test after the class’ completion.

Potluck speaker

SEQUIM — The women of the Sequim Worship Center will host a potluck meeting with a guest speaker Monday.

The free event will be held in Fellowship Hall of the center, located at 640 N. Sequim Ave., at 10 a.m.

Attendees are asked to bring a food dish to share.

Laura Olvera, a chemical dependency professional from Klallam Counseling Services, will speak at the meeting about addiction.

Staff expect a high turnout for this event and advise those interested to make register in advance.

New addition

SEQUIM — Board members of the Dungeness River Audubon Center, Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, and Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Council recently met at Red Cedar Hall in Blyn for a signing ceremony to commit to an addition of the existing river center building in Sequim.

The building renovation will add 5,000 square feet of education, office and meeting space.

A new east entrance is planned and will be located on 4½ acres of land the tribe recently purchased to accommodate the expansion and additional parking.

More information about their plans will follow in the coming months.

Unity guest speaker

PORT ANGELES — This Sunday, Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. worship service will host guest speaker Cate Montana.

Her lesson is titled “Making Real and Lasting Change Happen.”

According to a news release: “We all know about the Law of Attraction, but how do you make it work?

“Learn how to use the law correctly to take manifesting to the next level.”

Montana has a master’s degree in psychology; has worked with plant medicines with shamans in the Amazon jungles of Peru, the Andes in Ecuador and the deserts of New Mexico; studied yoga in India; hiked solo through England’s sacred sites; and lived in isolated cabins in the wilderness.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Child care is available during the service.

Taize service

SEQUIM — All are welcome to the ecumenical Taize service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., at 7 p.m. ­Monday.

There will be a meditative, candlelit atmosphere that includes singing simple, repetitive songs during the hourlong service.

Taize will continue to be held the fourth Monday of each month.

Sweet Presence

PORT ANGELES — Sweet Presence — Dolly, Ernie and Corey Schaber of Abbotsford, B.C. — will perform at Bethany Pentecostal Church at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The concert of Southern and traditional gospel will be at the church, 508 S. Francis St.

Buffet luncheon

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Christian Women’s Connection will host a buffet luncheon at the Port Angeles CrabHouse Restaurant on Tuesday.

The CrabHouse, located at 221 N. Lincoln St., will also feature a fashion show, music and a speaker from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event costs $16.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a coat of their choosing, sign up and then showcase it during the fashion show.

Karen Pritchard will sing and Thelma McCoy will accompany on piano.

Shirely Mozena will present her speech “Heartbreak to Joy: One Woman’s Story.”

Spots are limited for this event, so staff members advise those interested to make reservations.

Businesses partner for local clubs

SEQUIM — Papa Murphy’s and Ross Stores Inc. are partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs with in-store campaigns to raise funds to benefit local Boys & Girls Clubs.

Papa Murphy’s, in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington, kicked off its “I Heart Pizza Month” campaign for the month of February.

Customers are invited to purchase a heart for $1, which will be donated to the local clubs, according to a news release.

Papa Murphy’s is partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington state to support Healthy Lifestyle programming at local clubs.

The partnership will support efforts to positively impact youth through gardening programs, cooking and meal programs, nutrition education and other related programs and activities that focus on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Ross Stores Inc. is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of America with a four-week program called “Help Local Kids Learn.”

Customers in Sequim and Port Angeles can make a monetary contribution at their local Ross Dress for Less location during checkout to be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula.

“In February, we invite our customers to join us in donating to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America,” said Gary Cribb, executive vice president, stores and loss prevention for Ross Stores Inc.

“Last year, members of our community contributed $1,532 for vital club programs in our two clubhouses,” says Janet Gray, resource development director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula.
