NEWS BRIEFS: Port of Port Angeles to consider budget Tuesday … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Port of Port Angeles commissioners will consider approving a 2018 budget as well as a 1 percent increase in its property tax levy when they meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The commissioners will meet at port headquarters, 338 W. First St.

Commissioners also will conduct a public hearing on modifying the Port’s Comprehensive Scheme of Harbor Improvements to allow it to declare property east of Carlsborg Road as surplus.

The port owns about 0.36 acres of Carlsborg Railroad Right of Way property approximately 420 linear feet north of the intersection of Carlsborg Road and Business Park Loop. It has never occupied the land.

The adjacent landowner, who has use the property for many years for parking and access, has asked the port to declare the land surplus and transfer title to him via a quick claim deed at no cost to the port. To do so, the port must modify the harbor improvements document.

Commissioners will consider the Rite Bros. aviation lease and change order for improvements of the multi-tenant industrial building facility.

Planting Hope fundraiser tickets on sale

PORT ANGELES — Tickets for the Wednesday, Nov. 29, Planting Hope for Port Angeles fundraiser are available.

They can be purchased for $40 apiece at The Answer For Youth, 826 E. First St., or online at www.brownpapertickets.com.

During the event at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., a prime rib dinner with dessert will be available.

Nathan West, director of the city’s Community and Economic Development Department, will speak about the future of the community.

John Brewer, former Peninsula Daily News publisher and editor, will be the emcee for the night.

Tax-deductible donations will also be accepted.

Proceeds will benefit TAFY and its Sprouting Hope Greenhouse.

Dream award deadline extended

PORT ANGELES — Soroptimist International of Port Angeles’ Noon and Jet Set clubs have extended the Live Your Dream Award deadline to Thursday, Nov. 30.

The application form is available to download at www.pencol.edu. Forms are to be postmarked to Sally Pearson, 352 Schoolhouse Point Lane, Sequim, WA 98382, or emailed to sallypearson61@gmail.com.

The award, formerly titled the Women’s Opportunity Award, will be awarded in the amount of $500 to $1,000.

Eligible candidates must live in the Port Angeles area, have financial need, be a female head-of-household and have financial responsibility for a dependent.

Applicants must also have a 2.5 grade-point average or better, be enrolled in continuing education for the 2017-18 academic year and attend an undergraduate degree program or a vocational skills training program.

The scholarship can be used to offset costs associated with efforts to attain higher education, including tuition, books and fees.

Recipients of the award may also be eligible to receive region-level awards that are granted through Soroptimist’s 28 geographic regions, according to a news release.
