NEWS BRIEFS: Port Angeles Tuna drive scheduled to end April 2 … and other items

PORT ANGELES — The 24th annual Community Tuna Fish Drive to benefit local food banks will end April 2.

Individuals, businesses, clubs, churches and organizations are invited to participate by donating cans of tuna fish.

Collection barrels will be at a number of Port Angeles locations including Safeway East, Safeway Lincoln, Mt. Pleasant IGS, First Federal branches, Elwha Klallam Heritage Center, Naval Elks Lodge, Clallam County Courthouse and Port Angeles Food Bank.

The goal of this year’s Community Tuna Drive is to collect the equivalent of 24,000 cans of tuna.

Tuna also will be accepted for any other food bank or food distribution program on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Technology meet

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend School District Technology Committee will meet today at 3:30 p.m.

The committee will meet at the Gael Stuart building (Room S-5), 1610 Blaine St.

The agenda for the meeting will include reports for committee members to discuss issues at the district, as well as district-wide technology projects.

PAHS orchestra

BELLINGHAM — The Port Angeles High School orchestras swept gold ratings during a statewide high school orchestra festival, sponsored by the state chapter of the American String Teachers Association and Western Washington University.

On March 16 and 17, each orchestra performed in divisions including freshmen-only ensembles Concert, large string ensembles Symphonic and Chamber orchestras.

Every participating group received bronze, silver or gold ratings — based solely upon the quality of their performance.

“In addition, among other gold-level groups, our Concert and Chamber orchestras each placed first in their respective divisions,” said James Ray, Port Angeles High School orchestra teacher.

The adjudicators for the festival included string-orchestra faculty from universities in the state and British Columbia.

Area students received written and verbal praise from these judges, highlighting the chamber’s “strong, focused sound;” a “Wonderful communication and expression” for the chamber; and “Good energy … and overall musicianship” for symphonic.

One judge described the chamber’s performance of the opening movement from Grieg’s “Holberg Suite” as “the best he’d ever heard,” according to a news release.

Swim Doggie Swim open house slated

SEQUIM — An open house and ribbon-cutting at Swim Doggie Swim have been set for Saturday at noon.

The public is invited to attend the free event at the spa at 261043 U.S. Highway 101.

Attendees will receive a $10-off coupon for the spa.

Drawings will be held for two free swim lessons and a dog gift basket.

Refreshments will be served.

Those interested are requested to leave their dogs at home.

The ribbon-cutting will be for Swim’s acquisition of La Spa Paw on Jan. 1.
