NEWS BRIEFS — Performers to take to Open Stage on Wednesday in Port Angeles . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — Musicians, poets, dancers and other performing artists are invited to the monthly Open Stage at Studio Bob, 1181/2 E. Front St., this Wednesday evening.

There’s no charge to perform, watch or listen during this gathering from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Local artist and musician Doug Parent is the host of the Open Stage, which takes place at Studio Bob every third Wednesday of the month.

Sequim’s Black Bear Diner donates to Make-A-Wish

SEQUIM — The Black Bear Diner, located at 1471 E. Washington St., is celebrating Make-A-Wish month by donating $1 for every pie, cake, cobbler and egg nog milkshake purchased.

All proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Since 2008, Black Bear Diner has raised more than $750,000 for Make-A-Wish.

This year’s drive ends Wednesday, Dec. 31.

Gift of Giving set

SEQUIM — The Cornerstone Baptist Temple, 44 Joslin Road, will host a Gift of Giving event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The church is donating free Christmas gifts to those who come.

Attendees can keep the gifts or share with others.

Free wrapping will be available.

Coffee will be served.

Santa Lucia celebration scheduled

CHIMACUM — Thea Foss No. 45 Daughters of Norway will celebrate the annual Santa Lucia celebration and “Juletrefest” at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21.

The event is open to the public and is a potluck luncheon.

The Santa Lucia procession acknowledges the legend of Santa Lucia feeding the poor in Sweden. Her light was candles in her hair, freeing up her arms to carry the food.

There also will be traditional singing and dancing around the Christmas tree, known as “Juletrefest.”

Attendees are asked to bring a food bank item.

Solstice celebration

PORT TOWNSEND — Madrona MindBody Institute, Building 310, Fort Worden Way, will hold a Yoga and Dance Solstice Celebration from 9 p.m. to midnight Sunday, Dec. 21.

Admission is a suggested donation of $10 to $20.

Proceeds benefit foster children of Jefferson County (Department of Social and Health Services).

The celebration will include yoga, dance, massage therapy and more.

Throughout the event, there will be certified massage therapists on hand.

Chain gang clears trash in Clallam

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang picked up on the Elwha Hill section of U.S. Highway 101’s Adopt-a-Highway and on West 18th Street.

A total of 1,180 pounds of trash was removed from illegal dump sites on Blue Mountain, Sisson and Olympic Hot Springs roads.

In addition, about 1,980 scotch broom plants at the Mount Pleasant Pit and Ranger Pit were pulled, adding to the 2014 annual removal total of 36,480 plants.

Crews cleared trees from Mount Pleasant and Blue Mountain roads.
