NEWS BRIEFS: Mason bee care lecture scheduled today in Sequim . . . and other items

SEQUIM — “The Life and Care of Mason Bees,” a program presented by Mary Flo Bruce, WSU master gardener, will take place during the Sequim Prairie Garden Club’s meeting today.

The public is welcome to the grange, 387 E. Washington St., at 10:30 a.m.

Bruce will focus on the importance of bees and how gardeners can attract and keep mason bees in their gardens.

The program will be followed by a brown-bag lunch, coffee, tea and desserts offered by Becky Samson, Donna Day, Marty Tipton and Joni Kennedy.

A club business meeting will conclude the event.

Plant answer clinics

PORT ANGELES — WSU Extension Clallam County Master Gardeners will begin weekly plant answer clinics for the 2015 season in Port Angeles on today.

The clinics will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Monday except for holidays through Oct. 26 in the lobby of the old Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.

Saturday plant answer clinics in Sequim will start Saturday, May 23, at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road.

Local Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand to identify plants, address plant and pest problems, and help clients find research-based information for their gardens.

The clinics are free and open to home gardeners. No appointments are necessary.

People with questions are asked to bring in bagged samples of healthy and damaged areas of plants, including stem, leaves, flowers, fruits or cones, and living specimens of garden pests.

Alzheimer’s talk slated Tuesday in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — A conversation about coping with the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease will follow the 7:30 p.m. screening of “Still Alice” at the Rose Theatre on Tuesday.

“Still Alice” stars the Academy Award-winning Julianne Moore as a linguistics professor facing early-onset Alzheimer’s.

The Port Townsend Film Festival sponsors the talk, part of the First Tuesday Salon series at the Rose, 235 Taylor St., where the discussion takes place after the credits roll.

Bonsai society

SEQUIM — The Dungeness Bonsai Society will host Ken Dyer of Tacoma at the Tuesday meeting at 10 a.m. at Pioneer Park, 387 E. Washington St.

Dyer, a professional landscape consultant and pruner as well as a bonsai enthusiast, will discuss the use of Japanese black pine in the garden and bonsai culture.

He will demonstrate pruning and styling on several examples and discuss the “pine cycle” as it relates to pruning.

The meeting is open to the public and free of charge.

Refreshments will be served.

Senior nutrition

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■   Tuesday: Green salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, asparagus tips, garlic bread and melon.

■   Wednesday: Cole slaw, sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, stir fry veggies and fresh pineapple.

■   Thursday: Three-bean salad, broccoli and cheese casserole, roasted reds, garlic bread and fruit cup.

■   Friday: Green salad, Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, veggies and baked apples.

Meditation circles

PORT ANGELES — Joyous Refuge will host meditation circles at 231 E. 12th St. from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. this Wednesday and the following Wednesdays, March 11, 18 and 25.

Admission is by donation, and all are welcome.

Forty minutes of meditation will be followed by discussion of various topics.

Media share event slated at Boiler Room

PORT TOWNSEND — The Boiler Room, 711 Water St., will host a Video Beach Party v.2.0 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The interactive media sharing event is a follow-up to February’s 711 Fun Street.
