NEWS BRIEFS: Flight operations scheduled in Coupeville this week … and other items

COUPEVILLE — There will be field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville this week.

Training has been scheduled for midafternoon and night Wednesday and night Thursday.

Operations also have been scheduled at Ault Field.

They will occur from early to midafternoon to night Monday, as well as midmorning to early afternoon Wednesday.

The schedule is subject to change to meet mission requirements.

Boating classes

Two boating classes co-sponsored by Washington Sea Grant and Washington State University Jefferson County Extension will be offered Saturday, March 18, and Sunday, March 19.

On Saturday, a workshop about preventing common engine problems will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Walt Trisdale’s Shop, located at 81 Workman St., No. 7, Port Townsend.

The workshop will cover troubleshooting and maintenance of fuel, lubrication, electrical, cooling and exhaust systems in marine diesel engines.

On March 19, a hands-on class about preventing common corrosive problems will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, located at 42 N. Water St., Port Hadlock.

Facilitated by certified instructor Kevin Ritz, the class will cover varying corrosions of stainless steel, aluminum, bronze, advantages and disadvantages of different types of anodes, analysis of wood damage from zinc, controlled potential systems for wood boats, propeller and prop shaft coatings, as well as methods for detecting AC/DC stray current.

Both classes cost $60 to attend, and registration is required.
