NEWS BRIEFS — Fee waived for Port Angeles garbage service change till Dec. 4 . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — Between today and Dec. 4, Port Angeles residential garbage customers can change their garbage service without incurring the usual $30 change-service fee.

New rates are effective Jan. 1, but the change of service will be effective immediately, city officials said.

Customers can choose weekly service at $34.41 per month or every-other-week garbage collection at $21.46 per month.

Yard waste service is optional and is $8.50 per month.

Recycling service is offered at no additional charge.

Change forms are available at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St., and at www.cityofpa.us.

Forms are due at the front counter in City Hall by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4.

They also can be deposited in the drop box outside or mailed to City Hall at P.O. Box 1150, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Only customers requesting changes to their service need to return the forms.

Discussion group mulls global future

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon Friday.

The topic is “The State of the State: The Global Contest for the Future of Government.”

According to a news release: “Western countries became powerful thanks in part to three (and a half) revolutions in government that leveraged the power of technology and the force of ideas.

“Now, a fourth revolution has begun — but it is not clear yet which countries will shape it and whether they will draw from liberal democracy or authoritarianism.”

The suggested background reading for the discussion is the article “The State of the State” from the July/August edition of Foreign Affairs.

Roller derby bout

SEQUIM — The Port Scandalous Strait Shooters are uniting with their alumni for a bout at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. First St., on Saturday.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the game starting at 6 p.m.

Port Scandalous plays against the Grunge City Rollers out of Marysville in their last game of the year.

CrossFit food drive

PORT ANGELES — CrossFit Thunder Ridge Thanksgiving will hold a food drive/workout of the day at 325½ W. Second St. from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Admission is free; a donation of a nonperishable food item is requested for participation.

The workout involves shuttling food from the gym to the Port Angeles Food Bank while volunteers hand out Thanksgiving meals to families in need. No prior CrossFit experience is required.

PORT ANGELES — Wenner-Davis & Associates Insurance is holding an autumn food drive until Nov. 26.

Participants can drop off a nonperishable item and get entered into a chance to win a gift card.

The drawing will be held Dec. 1.

Proceeds help support the Port Angeles Salvation Army.

Donations can be dropped off at 102 E. First St. between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Holiday lunch slated

PORT ANGELES — The Newcomers’ Club of the Olympic Peninsula will hold a holiday luncheon at the Red Lion Hotel, 211 N. Lincoln St., starting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2.

A buffet luncheon featuring musical entertainment by Vocal Unlimited follows a time for socializing.

Vocal Unlimited is Port Angeles High School’s select choir composed of the school’s 21 finest singers.

Holiday craft fair

PORT TOWNSEND — A juried arts and crafts fair will be held at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28-29.

The 24th annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair offers year-round, handmade craftwork from Northwest artists.

In addition to the artwork, local student musicians will be performing downstairs in the gym along with more crafts.

This show is staged by the Port Townsend Arts Guild, a self-supporting nonprofit arts guild offering scholarships to Jefferson County students majoring in the arts.

The artists donate a portion of each sale to the Jefferson County Food Bank.
