More county incumbents file for elections in Clallam

Two more incumbent Clallam County office-holders filed for re-election Tuesday, and the expected Democratic challenger for the state House of Representatives filed in Olympia.

Prosecuting Attorney Deb Kelly, R-Port Angeles, and District 2 Judge Erik Rohrer of Forks filed at the Clallam County Courthouse in Port Angeles.

Both so far are unopposed. In Clallam County, only the candidates for prosecutor and county commissioner run with political party affiliations. The other offices are nonpartisan.

On the state level, Sequim firefighter Kevin Van De Wege filed papers for the Democratic nomination in the 24th Legislative District, which includes Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Van De Wege is expected to be the party nominee against incumbent Rep. Jim Buck, R-Joyce, setting up a rematch of their 2004 election in which Buck won by just 2.4 percent.

Buck filed as a candidate on Monday.

Public utility district

In the Clallam County Public Utility District, incumbent Ted Simpson filed Tuesday for re-election to the District 3 position.

He will face challenger Cindy Kelly, who filed Monday.

More candidates filed Tuesday for the Charter Review Commission that will review Clallam County’s home-rule charter.

Five people will be chosen from each county commissioner’s district to recommend charter changes for the November 2008 election.

Tuesday filings were made by Sue Erzen of Sequim, District 1; Michele “Mickie” Vail, Teri Schwiethale and Terry L. Roth, all of Port Angeles, District 2; and Patti Adler of Clallam Bay, District 3.

In the U.S. Senate party primaries, five people joined the statewide race Tuesday.

The additional challengers are the expected Republican nominee, Mike McGavick of Seattle; perennial Democratic candidate Mike the Mover of Edmonds; Green Party candidate Aaron Dixon of Seattle; Democrat Hong Tran of Seattle; and independent candidate Robin Adair of Seattle.

The incumbent, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Mountlake Terrace, still hadn’t officially filed as of early Tuesday evening.

Candidates for all offices have until Friday at 4:30 p.m. to file papers and pay fees.

Candidates for state and federal offices must file with the secretary of state’s office in Olympia or online at www.secstate.wa.gov/elections.

A real-time list of candidates in state, judicial and federal races can also be found on the secretary of state’s Web site.
