PORT ANGELES — A mental evaluation has been ordered for a Port Angeles man accused of attempting to kidnap a 6-year-old boy from Hollywood Beach on June 22.
During a Wednesday hearing, Clallam County Superior Court Judge George Wood ordered an evaluation for Arthur Delfield Crall, 56, by psychiatrists from Western State Hospital while Crall remains in the Clallam County jail.
Charges
Crall has been charged with one count each of second-degree attempted kidnapping and second-degree assault.
His arraignment will wait until his mental evaluation is completed and reviewed, said John Troberg, chief deputy Clallam County prosecuting attorney.
Crall, described as a transient living in Port Angeles in court documents, remained in jail Wednesday on $35,000 bail.
Defense attorney John Hayden of the nonprofit Clallam Public Defender requested that Crall be evaluated because Hayden has concerns about his mental competency.
Wood set a Superior Court hearing for an update on the mental evaluation for July 25.
Port Angeles police said Crall pushed a man down on Hollywood Beach at about 7 p.m. and tried repeatedly to grab the man’s 6-year-old son.
The father pushed Crall into the water and called 9-1-1, police said.
Crall later told police he was trying to take the boy “back to his mother.”
He told police he did not know the boy.
