Memorial Day remembrance set for Sunday at Captain Joseph House

The Captain Joseph House Foundation will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The ceremony, which includes a flyover by the U.S. Coast Guard, will be in front of the Captain Joseph House, 1108 S. Oak St.

The ceremony will honor Staff Sgt. Martin R. Apolinar, Sgt. Aaron J. Blasjo and Capt. Joseph W. Schultz, all of whom were killed in the Wardak Province of Afghanistan on May 29, 2011.

Masks and social distancing are required.

Other commemorations are planned on Monday.

Port Angeles

Unlike in past years, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1024 does not plan a ceremony at Port Angeles Memorial Park Cemetery on Memorial Day.

Sequim

SEQUIM — Post 62 of the American Legion and Post 29 of the American Legion will host Memorial Day ceremonies at local cemeteries Monday.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Sequim View Cemetery, 1505 Sequim-Dungeness Way; 11:30 a.m., Jamestown Cemetery, Cemetery Road; noon, Dungeness Cemetery, 2153 Lotzgesell Road; and 12:45 p.m., Blue Mountain Cemetery, Blue Mountain Road.

Local groups placing American flags at two Sequim cemeteries on Saturday are seeking help with the effort.

Members of Jack Grennan American Legion Post 62 will be at Sequim View Cemetery, 1505 Sequim Dungeness Way, at 9 a.m., and members of the Daughters of the American Revolution-Michael Trebert Chapter will be at Dungeness Cemetery, 2153 Lotzgesell Road, to place flags for Memorial Day ceremonies slated for Monday.

Gardiner

GARDINER — The Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760 will conduct Memorial Day services at Gardiner Community Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. Monday.

A flag will be displayed on each veteran’s gravesite, around the cemetery and down the sidewalk.

The public is invited to attend, but parking is limited so carpools are recommended.

The Gardiner Cemetery is the burial place for Marvin G. Shields, a Jefferson County native and the only U.S. Navy Seabee to be given the Medal of Honor.

Forks

FORKS — A Memorial Day ceremony will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Forks Cemetery on Calawah Way.

Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fletcher-Wittenborn Post 9106; the city of Forks; American Legion Post 106; Boy Scouts; and other groups will provide a brief program.

Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The Marvin Shields Post 26 American Legion and Elks Lodge 317 will observe Memorial Day at local cemeteries Monday.

The post will conduct services at 10 a.m. at Fort Worden Cemetery, 2213 Spruce St.; 10:30 a.m. at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Cemetery St.; 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, 4299 San Juan Ave.; and at 11:30 a.m. at City Pier, 103 Hudson St.

Services at each site will include a wreath laying, a prayer, a gun salute by the honor guard and the playing of taps.

Chimacum

CHIMACUM — The Bruce F. Matheson Post 7498 Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a memorial ceremony at 3 p.m. Monday

The ceremony will be at Greenwood Cemetery, 9099 state Highway 19, Chimacum.
