PORT TOWNSEND — More than a week after high winds and harsh waves ravaged parts of Larry Scott Trail south of the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven during a Feb. 4 storm, crews are still working to repair the wounded pathway.
The affected portion of trail begins at Boat Haven and stretches to Thomas Street, more than a quarter-mile scarred with about 20 deep gouges.
The trail section is currently closed while repair work is in progress.
“We haven’t had this kind of damage there ever since we built the trail in 1996,” said Mark Thurston, Jefferson County Public Works project manager.
Crews from Port Townsend-based Leavitt Trucking, working under an estimated $60,000 to 70,000 contract, have been busy since Feb. 6 filling in the eroded portions with Shine Rock Quarry boulders.
Trail reopening on Friday
Thurston said the repair work should be complete by Thursday with the trail expected to reopen Friday.
Public Works will be applying for emergency state funding to help with the cost of the storm-related project as well as numerous other countywide repairs caused by the storm.
If Public Works is unable to procure emergency funding, the money will come from the Jefferson County road fund.
Although the trail is expected to reopen on Friday, it will be a short-lived opening.
Thurston said the trail will be resurfaced with fine gravel next week, probably on Tuesday.
