LAPUSH — The Quileute tribe’s new totem pole is impressing visitors and tribal members as they pass it in front of the new A-ka-lat Center.
“Tribal members are still driving by and going up to the pole to get a look at it,” said Bonita Cleveland, Quileute cultural official and project leader for the center project.
“I drove back early the next morning to look at it when everyone was gone and am still amazed by it.”
The 25-foot cedar totem — featuring representations of a thunderbird, seals, whale and wolf — was raised Saturday before about 800 people.
Two bald eagles circled above as the pole was lifted into position using ropes.
“The new pole being raised was very emotional, many of our elders were crying and proud to see the new pole go up,” Cleveland said.
“This is going to help our community unite and is a good way for children to learn about our traditions.”
